Jessica Estrada loves the outdoors and any sport that involves an element of danger. She loves to surf, wake surf, paddle board and do bouldering. Unfortunately, Jessica had to give up on skateboarding and BMX due to safety concerns. She still cruisers around on her longboard though during the offseason of CrossFit. Speaking of CrossFit, Jessica was a regional athlete in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. She took 2014 off because of hip surgery. Jessica competed at the CrossFit Games in 2012 and 2015.

1) What kind of athletic background did you have prior to starting CrossFit?
I grew up doing gymnastics. I took a break in middle school from it to play other sports (volleyball, basketball and track). I picked it back up in high school and competed for my high school team. Once I graduated from high school, I started racing in 5k's, 10k's, Half Marathons and Triathlons. In 2006, I qualified for the Duathalon World Championships in the age group division and finished 4th in my age group (20-25). I did not particularly like endurance sports, but I wanted to remain competitive and that seemed like the most logical choice as an adult...until I discovered CrossFit. Once I started Crossfit, I sold my bikes and made the transition to CrossFit as my new sport.
2) What's a typical day in Jessica's life look like?
4:30 am - Wake-up, make coffee and out the door
5:30 - 7:30 am - Coach the Sport Program
8:00 am - Breakfast, more coffee, emails and programming
9:45 am - mobility, warm-up, train
12:00 pm - meetings, programming, video content planning and lunch
3:00 pm - Afternoon training session
5:00 pm - Coach the Sport Program
7:30 pm - Dinner, log the workouts for the next day, Decompress from the day
9:30 pm - Bed
3) What's in your gym bag right now?
The most important things I can keep in my bag are my lifting shoes, weight belt, knee sleeves, running shoes, jump rope and "Ancient Chinese Secret Spray" (it's a Chinese herbal medicated spray to relieve minor aches and pains of muscles and joints). Other things that I keep in my bag are: wrist wraps, CrossFit Games coin, Callus shaver, and extra pair of long tights (for rope climbs).
4) What's your favorite workout?
My favorite workout is "Amanda" (9, 7, 5 Ring Muscle-ups and Snatches). I love all gymnastics movements except strict HSPU and any technical lift or movement.
5) What motivates you in and out of the gym?
Myself, my teammates and my athletes. I love the idea of pushing my body as far as I can and testing its limit (genetical potential). Every training session I am being pushed to work harder by my training partners. When it comes to competing on a team, I am expected to do my part and give everything I have for my teammates. They make me want to be better. I expect a lot out of the athletes that I coach. They come into class ready to work and they give there all. I would hope that they would expect the same out of me when I am on the floor competing and representing our gym.
